Windows Security & Microsoft Defender: Is Additional Antivirus Software Necessary?

Online security involves much more than simply installing antivirus software. Computers can be exposed to malicious software, phishing, unsafe downloads, compromised websites, fraudulent messages and other threats through everyday internet use.
Modern Windows computers include built-in security features, but effective protection also depends on keeping the operating system and software up to date, using appropriate security settings, protecting user accounts and passwords, maintaining reliable backups and recognising suspicious activity.
Antivirus and other security software can provide an important layer of protection, but no security product can prevent every threat. Problems can also occur when security software is outdated, incorrectly configured, conflicting with other software or no longer supported.
Is Additional Antivirus Software Necessary?
For many Windows users, the security features already included with Windows provide an appropriate starting point for everyday computer protection.
Microsoft Defender Antivirus is integrated with Windows Security and works alongside other built-in protections provided by the operating system. Installing additional antivirus software is therefore not automatically necessary and can sometimes introduce additional software, notifications, subscriptions or configuration issues without addressing the underlying cause of a security problem.
Rather than simply adding another security product, we prefer to look at the overall condition and configuration of the computer.
This can include checking Windows Security, updates, browsers, user accounts, installed software, backups and other settings relevant to how the computer is actually used.
If a computer is displaying security warnings, unusual behaviour or suspected malware, the first step should be to determine what is actually happening rather than automatically installing another antivirus product.
What Should You Check If You Have a Security Concern?
- Windows Security status – Check whether Microsoft Defender Antivirus, firewall and other Windows Security protections are operating normally.
- Windows and software updates – Keep Windows, browsers and commonly used applications up to date so known security vulnerabilities can be addressed.
- Unfamiliar software or browser changes – Unexpected applications, browser extensions, redirects, pop-ups or changes to settings may warrant investigation.
- User accounts and passwords – Security problems are not always caused by malware. Compromised passwords, email accounts or online services may require separate investigation and account-security measures.
- Backups – Important information should be backed up independently so that a computer failure, malware incident or other problem does not automatically result in data loss.
- Unusual computer behaviour – Unexpected warnings, excessive activity, unexplained performance problems or other unusual behaviour should be investigated rather than simply installing additional security software.
Computer security is best approached as a combination of appropriate configuration, supported software, updates, secure accounts, backups and informed computer use. If something does not appear right, identifying the cause is generally more useful than simply adding another security product.
Why Can Antivirus or Security Software Cause Problems?
Security software itself can sometimes contribute to computer problems, particularly where multiple security products have been installed over time.
Some issues we commonly investigate include:
- Multiple antivirus programs installed – Running more than one antivirus or security suite can create conflicts, duplicate background processes, reduce performance and interfere with normal security functions. We sometimes find computers with several security products installed, even though the user may not realise they are all present.
- Old or partially removed security software – Previous antivirus products may leave services, drivers or other components behind after they have been replaced or uninstalled.
- Expired subscriptions – Commercial security software may continue displaying warnings or have reduced functionality after a subscription expires, sometimes leading users to install yet another security product.
- Incorrect or changed settings – Security settings can be altered by software installations, updates, user changes or previous troubleshooting.
- Outdated or unsupported software – Older security products may no longer operate correctly with a current version of Windows or may no longer receive appropriate updates.
- Existing malware or unwanted software – If suspicious behaviour is already occurring, the computer should be properly assessed rather than assuming that installing another antivirus product will resolve the problem.
- Performance problems mistaken for security problems – A slow or unstable computer can have many causes, including storage, memory, software, hardware or configuration problems. Security software is only one possibility.
Adding another antivirus program is not necessarily the solution. Where Microsoft Defender and Windows Security are appropriate for the computer, we generally prefer to identify and resolve the underlying problem rather than adding unnecessary security software.
